Gary (Elheran) Francis
19?? – 2020
Elheran was for over 40 years a Scottish Highland and Country/ceili dancer, singer, stage performer, dance teacher/ethnographer, and general mischief maker. His many “roles” include but are not limited to: fencer and fencing teacher, raconteur, cultural historian, re-enactor, workshop leader, and general resource for Scottish and maritime history, language, dialect, and culture.
He was a longtime dancer with the Red Thistle RSCDS demonstration team, founder of Piedmont Highlanders, and one of the founding supporters and members of numerous Dickens Fair and Renaissance Faire performing groups over the years, including Clan Colin, The Guild of St. Brigid, and Siamsa le Cheile. He also taught fencing and fenced with the Cardiff/Corinthian Rose, and was known to dance the Sailor’s hornpipe on the ships at Hyde Pier and participate in reenactment of Scottish history and historical events and numerous venues. He was also a devout “shinty” player and lifelong avid walker. He was much loved by many in the larger re-enactor, Faire, and dance communities and is/will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Denise Francis.
